Quality Performance and Maximum Durability
While any rear wheel drive vehicle can have a Universal Joint (U-Joint), they're typically found on pickups and SUVs. U-Joints connect the driveshaft to the transmission and rear differential, and they allow for a change in the angle of the driveline. This way, the vehicle's rear axle can move up and down without breaking the driveshaft.

3 Signs and Symptoms of U-Joint Failure
âClunk and ringâ noises heard when the vehicle is shifted from drive to reverse or reverse to drive is a common indication that the U-Joint needs replacement. A squeaking sound from dry U-Joints can be heard at low speeds (under 10 mph). This is an indication that lubrication is sorely needed as metal-on-metal contact has begun. Lubrication or replacement should be undertaken immediately.
Vibration at middling speeds (25 mph) can be caused by U-Joints having worn enough that the driveshaft is moving side-to-side slightly with each rotation. The vibration indicates imminent failure of the U-joints, so immediate replacement is recommended.
Transmission fluid leaks from the U-Joint couplings can indicate the joint has been separated from the transmission or differential.
A problem other than the U-Joint may be to blame, but the U-Joint problem must be fixed immediately.
